Riyadh Air has placed a new firm order for 60 Airbus A321neo Family of aircraft.
Announced during the Future Investment Initiative (FII) held Riyadh, the startup Saudi Arabia-based carrier signed a purchase agreement for 60 A321neos with the European aircraft manufacturer for its first narrowbody aircraft.
The new order will bring the total number of aircraft ordered by the airline up to 132. Riyadh Air previously announced an order for 72 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners – comprising of 39 firm with options for 33 more in 2023.
According to Riyadh Air, the narrowbody aircraft order will ensure an optimal mix of aircraft to match the airline's network growth with a combination of narrow and widebody jets.
“We are pleased to embark on another key milestone in Riyadh Air’s journey with the carrier’s second major fleet order, this time in partnership with Airbus,” said His Excellency, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, PIF Governor and Chairman of Riyadh Air. “This deal underlines the airline’s ambitious intentions in advance of next year’s launch as it builds a comprehensive international network and establishes Riyadh as a major strategic global aviation hub.
“This investment will not only enable us to support economic growth in the aviation industry, it will ensure Riyadh Air operates one of the most fuel efficient fleets. It’ll be instrumental in helping Saudi Arabia achieve its decarbonisation goals,” said Riyadh Air CEO Tony Douglas. “This deal strongly reinforces the positive economic impact of Saudi Arabia’s newest airline on both a global and local scale to facilitate the fast-growing Saudi aviation ecosystem.”

With the new order by Riyadh Air, Airbus has taken in more than 6,700 orders for the A321neo from 90 customers around the world.
